For most people who are dealing with a bed bug infestation, the big question they have is: “How did the bed bugs get here?”
Although it is virtually impossible to determine where your bed bugs came from with any degree of certainty, our trained K-9s can give us some very valuable clues.
Read on for three examples of how our dogs told the stories of bed bugs for our customers.
In the Home
One of the main places bed bugs are found is in residential homes. Bed bugs can enter a home in a variety of ways, no matter how clean or dirty it is.
Take this family’s experience, for example:
A family of four lived in a two-story house, but they hardly ever used the upstairs areas. When they began getting some unexplained bites and suspected it might be bed bugs, they called us. We brought the dogs into their home, and immediately detected bed bugs in the upstairs guest bedroom. This was the only location the dogs alerted to and is a room that is “never” used. After talking to the family for a while, they remembered that they had had out-of-town visitors stay in that very room a couple months earlier, bringing with them some unwelcome guests – bed bugs.
The workday can be long enough, so who wants to add bed bugs to the equation?
In another case, employees were complaining about getting “mystery bites” at work and the Pest Control Company could not determine what it was. So, they called us in to try and figure out what was biting the employees. Upon inspection, our dogs signaled that there were bed bugs in a selection of cubicles, offices and the filing room. We later found out that all of the individuals who were getting bitten were part of the same department, which required them to be on the road conducting interviews in different homes. These individuals picked up bed bugs during their interviews and when they returned to the office, brought the bed bugs with them.
In the Hospital
When you visit a hospital, it is because you are sick or know someone who is sick. The last thing you expect is to encounter a bed bug problem. Unfortunately, this sometimes happens, and in buildings so large, like hospitals, it can be challenging to pinpoint exactly where the bed bugs are.
One hospital we inspected had a bed bug problem in several different areas.
Unable to pinpoint the various locations and overwhelmed with the size and task, they contacted us to bring in our expert bed bug detecting dogs. After examining the entire hospital, our dogs detected bed bugs in one room in the emergency room, one room in the surgery unit and one room in the intensive care unit, and one room in the psychiatric unit; all of which housed a patient they later found out carried the bed bugs with him.
Bed bugs are annoying creatures, but they cause even more anxiety when you cannot determine where they are coming from. If you fear that your house or business may have a bed bug infestation, contact us for an inspection from the best dogs around to ease your mind.
