There are a lot of misconceptions about bed bugs, but we’re here to set the record straight so you know what to look for and how to react should you face an infestation in your home or business.
1. Expectation: Bed bugs are only found in beds.
Reality: Their name may suggest that bed bugs are only discovered in beds, but the reality is that they can be almost anywhere in your home or business. Think headboards, furniture, couches, carpet, walls, picture frames, luggage and clothing, for example.
2. Expectation: Bed bugs only reside in dirty places.
Reality: Even the nicest homes and hotels are susceptible to bed bugs. Dirty conditions do not cause infestations. Instead, bed bugs are “hitchhikers” and travel place to place via people and their belongings. They aren’t picky and can adapt to any environment (rural/urban) or climate.
3. Expectation: Bed bugs are microscopic.
Reality: Unlike mites and lice, bed bugs are visible to the naked eye. Adult bed bugs measure about 5-7mm long and are a reddish-brown color.
4. Expectation: Bed bugs are nocturnal.
Reality: They may be most active at night, but bed bugs can bite at any time of the day. Again, bed bugs adjust to the situation they are in. So, if you sleep during the day, they will feed during that time.
5. Expectation: You know when you have bed bugs.
Reality: Bed bug bites can take multiple days to develop and some signs may not even show until two weeks after a bite. In some cases, people have no skin reaction at all to the bugs. Plus, bed bugs are reclusive creatures so they remain hidden most of the time.
